Working and Life

When I was working, I thought that work was my life, and in many respects it was. My mother told me that even things I enjoyed doing would eventually become work. She was right. Nonetheless, that was a good way to go for many years.

Now, I’m retired. I’ve learned, work was not my life, but the means to start living my life for the remaining years. Fortunately, my work has allowed me to enjoy an active retirement that includes doing things I didn’t have the time to do when I was working and to do things for other less fortunate people. When you retire you realize that your identity is not who you are as a worker, but that worker is the person who makes a life for you, your family, your community, and is also the person who allows you to discover who you really are.
